Protect Your Pet with a Doghouse PDF Print E-mail
If your dog spends time outdoors, you need to know that there's a predator threatening the safety of your pet.  It's not a human being, an insect or even another animal.  It's the weather, and it can make life unbearable for your best friend.

As a pet owner, you have a moral and legal obligation to protect your dog from the elements.  That means providing a safe and secure doghouse to shelter your pet from the blistering summer sun, torrential rains, strong winds, and cold, blowing snow.  Just because the dog is considered to be an "outside pet" does not mean that it isn't in need of proper shelter.

Some pet owners let their dogs use the garage for shelter.  For those who don't mind the mess, it can be a good idea.  This can only work, however, if there is a door to the garage that remains open all the time.  For many reasons, a properly designed and built doghouse is a much better option.

Size Matters

If your dog is a Rottweiler, then obviously a small doghouse won't do.  By the same token, a toy poodle will feel lost and insecure wandering around in an extra-large doghouse.  Make sure that the doghouse you choose is the right size for your pet.  What may seem like a simple "doghouse" to you is actually your pet's home and refuge, so first and foremost, it must offer comfort.  This is particularly true for dogs that are not allowed access to the family home.

A doghouse can be purchased pre-made, or it can be custom built.  If building your doghouse, be sure that it's created with your pet's dimensions and specifications in mind.  The doghouse must be large enough for your pet to turn and maneuver his or her body comfortably.  On the other hand, a doghouse that's too small will force your pet to seek out more suitable shelter, and may even encourage him or her to find another home altogether.

Doing It Yourself

If you decide to construct your own doghouse, you need to make sure that it will be structurally sound.  The last thing that you or your dog wants is a flimsy structure that can't hold up to the force of nature.  Make sure that your doghouse can withstand high winds, hold off heavy rains and keep your pet warm on the coldest winter days.  Check online or at the library for resource materials, and use advice from the experts to make sure you're building it right the first time.

Choosing Retail

Shopping for a doghouse can be a lot easier than building new.  Again, make sure that the size is appropriate for your pet.  It needs to be large enough so that your dog can fit his or her entire body inside, and then easily turn around.  Look for a well-built doghouse that comes with a warranty, so you and your pet can rest without worry.

Your pet is counting on you to provide the shelter that he or she needs.  Protect your pet with a doghouse designed to guarantee a long and happy life.
